Domestic violence shelter in Orange County California serving 16 communities

“Here at Laura's Home we are able to connect them with long-term services, both while they're here at Laura's Home and also moving forward so that they can work through that trauma that they might have witnessed or that they just might have been a part of through what their mom has experienced,” Skizenta said. We feel strongly that through outreach and education efforts we can continue to provide resources and inform our community about the services we provide. We offer various forms of education and see over 25,000 community members per year. So, a part of Skizenta’s work is helping the kids with their healing process.

We use the latest and greatest technology available to provide the best possible web experience. Home looks different for every family, butour ultimate goal is a home that it is sustainable, safe, and loving for allin a way that breaks generational cycles of poverty. For families, the Heart stage is about building trust and skills needed to work together toward a healthy future. Help is not only our first phase for families, but often the first opportunity a mother has to rest from despair, and a child to rest from confusion. The supervisor said it is possible for the kids to grow after experiencing or witnessing trauma.

Our staff works closely with each woman to help her set a path to achieve adequate income and sustainable housing. Part of this stage might also include basic education in our Resource Center, vocational training, group therapy and classes to heal from trauma and mental health issues, an on-site Intensive Outpatient Program, and connection to a local church, support groups, and chapel services. Even if a mother can obtain room in a family shelter, she is likely to feel unsafe and/or run out of time to both find work and housing to support her family. At Laura’s Home Women’s Crisis Center, our program for women and children, we make every effort to remove those barriers of fear.

In the final stage, moms and kids seekHome, which is not just a place, but a community. Moms are newly equipped to find jobs and resources that can support their family. They work with our Resource Center to determine budgets and find housing in school systems that will meet the needs of their children. And they also restore and build loving relationships to replace the ones that first led them to crisis. Our campus regularly hosts approximately 60 women and 90 childrenat Laura’s Home Women’s Crisis Center every night. Our private rooms can host families big and small, allowing moms and kids to bond and work together in safe spaces.

Heart

In Ohio,a single mother working a minimum wage job — the work most of our guests are eligible for — must work 100 hours each week to afford a basic two-bedroom apartment. The City Mission is addressing this critical need for affordable housing through theNew Horizons Program. Through this incredibly transformative program, we work with external organizations to empower women with children to become homeowners and break the cycle of poverty. And the response needed to change this heartbreaking reality is more complex and challenging than any other trend in homelessness we’ve seen. We work quickly to restore dignity to our guests by immediately providing toiletries, clothing, strollers, and any other essentials a family might require. Women must decide within the first 30 days if they would like to sign on for the full program at Lauras Home. If one decides to stay on past 30 days, they must make a commitment to living and learning at Lauras Home for our program, which lasts 6 months or more. We also have emergency shelter space during extreme weather or on a case by case basis. While the mothers who live there go to work or attend rehabilitation programming, they can send their children to the new space for child care and education opportunities. For women and children, we are a bridge from crisis to stability and self-sufficiency.

Healing Hearts

Skizenta said many of them are affected by crisis situations like homelessness, drug abuse and domestic violence. The City Mission is funded entirely by private donations from people like you. “We really want them to not just be here and be baby-sat, but also to sincerely grow and thrive and also work through whatever traumas they might have experienced as well,” Skizenta said. “It is our morning day care time," she said. "So, for the first hour of day care, they have free play. The inception of Laura's House was inspired by a true story about a woman called Laura from Orange County who was a victim of domestic violence. Laura Hein Moll's values and her life of discipline, sacrifice and hard work to provide for her family was a model and inspiration for Laura's Home.
